Last night's regular steel*wool Thursday night ride was partially apportioned in my favor since we are leaving the state for norcal pretty soon. ( Not as soon as previously planned, but still -- I'm only going to get one party!) It was good excuse to get some of these family guys up the hill to ride some Ned singletrack anyways! Thanks to Heyride, The Powers, Big Daddy, and KPOW for all the extra work and $ that went into the night. I'm lucky to have you as friends!

We did a short ride on the local stuff north of town and ended with some fun no brakes curvy singletrack before shooting down to the Reservoir on a trail I've somehow never done before. Funny how that goes. I've been here HOW long and still find new stuff that has been there for years? Nuts. So anyways, here's some photos from the night.

Tin Shed Sports and Salto coffee works opened a couple of weeks ago in Nederland. It's BigDaddy & KPOW's awesome creation of cranks and beans....oh, and great food, beer, wine and spacious atmosphere. Serious espresso, Modus Hoperandi and Stone IPA on tap, clocktower, rad west-facing outside 'plaza', bike stands to tune-up your own damn bike (or get Heyride to do it inside)...the list goes on and on. Heyride's managing the bike shop and I don't think has taken a day off since they opened.

It's pretty crazy to see a full-service bike shop in Ned with anything you need to go ride - including spanking new bikes. I hear winter gear is also on tap. The coffee and food at Salto is awesome and they have plans to soon roast their own in house. This place by FAR has the biggest space to kick back and relax in Ned. It's a bummer we're moving so we can't enjoy more of this place. Go check it out if you're in town and support this rad local business!
A hike near the new house on our trip out last week in between painting, moving stuff and so on. This area is popular in the summer but right now there's not a soul since the campgrounds are closed for the winter and haven't opened yet. Just a boating fisherman and we had the place to ourselves. But apparently we have to watch out for an attack river otter...no joke. It went after a person here last year...!?
Not sure what to write about this little terror but she's settling into her new home nicely and learning to kind of 'play' with the Guppies. She's so much more rambunctious than them though, she scares them. She still won't get IN water unless there's a rock she wants to grab in there or a stick, yep, she likes to chase rocks and sticks not balls or toys. It's really odd.

Spring is in full force at the ranch, hummingbirds are back, came in last week sometime. The Larkspur's are flowering on the back hill, and some of the Pasque's are already seeing out. Lots of wildlife almost every day - moose yesterday, two coyotes today, fox almost every day, deer passing through every other day, it's a great wildlife viewing property for sure.
So, from now on, I'm going to try to keep my bike stuff over at my Meriwether Cycles blog since I'm basically always 'testing' my own bikes to some degree. I'll leave this blog for my family and skiing and other random rants unrelated to cycling in all likelihood. A beautiful day yesterday up in the high country. This weather is unsettlingly nice. Hopefully we'll be in the new house in another state before the fire season really hits Ned! The Gups, Izzy, Mrs. M and I went up to Monkey Hill and around on a big morning hike to soak it all in. We didn't find my perfect sitting rock but came close. Great views to the south, no snow in sight anywhere. The trails are pretty much dry on the east side of the big road. It's hard not to be a hermit when this is outside your back door!
Some shots of yesterday's ride in Lake Pueblo State Park, around a 3 hour drive south of Ned. Our mtn thermostats were taken a bit off guard when the temps rose over 80 degrees with hardly a breath of breeze to speak of...but it was fun to swirl around on narrow singletrack and try not to use your brakes around the corners.
The trails in Pueblo are pretty flat so you can do most the trails on the south side of the reservoir in 3 hours if you keep moving. And that's what gets you in the end, not taking the time to drink water, and just going as fast as you can on these swoopy trails!

I definitely felt that the trails were fun, but I did get a bit mentally tired at the end of the ride, not from concentration too much on avoiding the huge cacti on the sides of the trail, but it's not extremely technical terrain and it's VERY smooth for the most part. A rigid singlespeed would be the call here, with something like a 34x15 for gearing.

The Freeride trail was the highlight for me, had some techy sections as seen in the bridges above which weren't difficult but just unique. In all, we did: Southside, Waterfall, Pronghorn, Voodoo (clockwise) where we ran into the Brit. He and Toopa were down there camping for the weekend and getting some warm weather singletrack and road riding in. After Voodoo, we went back on Log Drop, up Rock Canyon to Roller Coaster, down Skull Canyon trail, to Southside and then back to the car for more water. Then after some rest in the shade, we headed out for another hour on Conduit over to The Duke, up to Roller Coaster, down Broken Hip, up Watertower (not recommended, road climb and steep), and then down Freeride to Southside and back to the car.
In all honesty, it's a great place to go once or twice a year in the early spring or late fall when it's not too hot. But The trails did leave something to be desired. It's similar in feel to Fruita but much less technical and flatter topography. The map on the website is also pretty poor quality. There's no topo or aerial background and just lines on a white background. It's not easy to get lost since the signage is pretty good out on the land, but the map was just bad. Maybe I'm picky since I make maps but I was wanting more!Meriwetherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14484021097592671804noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1639855089804738817.post-70364870686311372942012-03-21T13:51:00.000-06:002012-03-21T13:51:33.420-06:00Izzy and Jesse

This March makes you wonder where'd the snow go? It's been in the 50s and 60s and sunny and none of that stuff that blows stuff around (I shall not speak its name). I know that April is the new March, but seriously, this is scary.
The pack is playing nice together, which is great news. Izzy is learning the ropes and not pushing the limits of what the Guppies will take. She's definitely a little bit of a puppy terror at times, but she is super attentive and learns really fast.

I used to try and take Jesse out on hikes and runs by herself (away from her brother Bear). She is much more fit and excited to explore than Bear be she was having nothing of it. Sad, but I understood how bonded she was to her brother. She would get out less because of his lowered energy level but that was OK with her (he's epileptic and is on a ton of anti-seizure meds so that makes him more tired easily).

One of the reasons we got a younger dog was to get Jesse a playmate so when Bear stopped wanting to play, the younger dog would still be ready to play. This...didn't work out so well...until now. With a little bit of coercing (treats and 'peer pressure') I was able to go on a long hike/run with Izzy and Jesse withOUT Bear! Very cool. It'll make Jesse happier too now that she'll get to explore more of the area with the new puppy.Meriwetherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14484021097592671804noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1639855089804738817.post-40589933126831540542012-03-17T20:13:00.001-06:002012-03-17T20:13:35.048-06:00Critter pics at DVR

The wind is wreaking havoc on Ned this week. It's truly ridiculous. They even had to postpone some of the Frozen Dead Guy Day 'event' since the tents were going to blow to Boulder. The horses, dogs, and especially humans are ready for it to end. Can't safely or have as much fun outside to ski, bike, or even hike when it's blowing like this. So for now, more puppy shots.
This little girl is tiring me out! I've never seen such spunk and energy. When we leave for 5 minutes she acts like it's been 5 years. Izzy now goes on 2 long hikes in the woods a day and gets to play in the yard as much as we have the time to let her. I wish I had that level of energy to keep up. After snowshoeing out back and trying to keep up with her, I'm worked, and it's only been a week! But the pure joy exuding from every one of Izzy's pores is inspiring. Soon, we'll have to try some ski-joring so I can glide when she can pulls my sorry ass!Meriwetherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14484021097592671804noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1639855089804738817.post-87724852469671216672012-02-23T18:41:00.000-07:002012-02-23T18:41:31.365-07:00Surprise pow dayand i had totally different plans today but after the txt from Heyride saying "10-inch rule. Going to ski Ptarmagin Hill. Want to join me?" I knew I had to go. (His work has a 10" rule--if it snows more than 10 inches overnight, you get a free powder day.)
Lucky for me that I can just work later, so that's just what I did. This is my last winter in Ned so gotta take advantage of it!
The road up to the spot was not plowed after the big turn. Luckily someone else had broken trail. We made it up to find three other big trucks up there parked a 1/4mile from the main parking area. One dude attempted the last leg, only to somehow turn around and park down below. The Spidercouple was there, ahead of us on their swanky new DPS fat skis! BadCop, who has new twins, even showed up with a friend at the bottom of our first run. Good fun, good snow. I'll definitely miss this place.
She's almost two (but i'm not so sure...she's a puppy), is an all black shepherd mix with a partially curly tail so we think husky because of that and her size = 50lbs. She is extremely cute, but shy of the camera (or iPhone) so getting a picture of her is insanely hard. You have to take pictures while she's not looking...
It's a long video, and jolty at times, but jiminy crickets...what an awesome ride! Not the longest ride, but that's expected on snow, on a local trail that I've never ridden a bike on in winter - nor COULD ride without my beloved Fatbike.

(PS- If you don't like weird instrumental 'rock' music (the band is Painkiller), you may want to turn down the volume. But if you do, turn it up! PPS- There are 3 reasons I use this type of music on my videos: (1) i love this music, (2) and they are long enough songs to match my video lengths, and (3) Youtube or whomever monitors Youtube videos doesn't have restrictions on most of my obscure music selections.)
safest spots we know of after a big dump. It's pretty much the most consistently best pow turns anytime actually. They *only* got 8-10" of cold smoke (super cold fluffy snow) and that was perfect since we could actually get
speed and make lots of turns. One track skimmed down the side of the run but
other than that, we had fresh tracks on this amazing mostly bluebird
Colorado day. More pics from Krugy will show up eventually as he had his
sweet huge 85mm camera out in force but for now here are my point and
shoot camera shots as well as a go-pro movie that was more fun to create
than edit.
It just started snowing when I went for a fatbike ride at 5:30pm on Thursday night on my way over to meet the rest of the Steel*Wool'ers at BC pizza for beer and food. By the next morning we had 22" at 7am on the deck. Then by noon we had a total of 27". It kept snowing until afternoon Saturday! This storm dropped more snow in any Feb in the last 100 years.

Here's some pics and video of the Friday ski tour. We were lucky enough to get the local 'manager' to take a run at the trail with his snowmobile since we were first trax. Breaking trail through near 30" of snow on the 1st day on skis in two months is...well, you know, hard.
This was too much snow for this slope angle (25 degrees at most), but it was freaking fun nonetheless. We had to get momentum on the skin track then jump off to get turns and then head back to the skin track to get more speed again. The 2nd and 3rd runs were much easier and funner than the first because we could use our tracks from the 1st run to get speed.
The best:

Mountain biking continues in wintertime.

Um...new gear!!

You ride more than you think without going over the bars (for the most part).

Skidding is fair game -- Surf the downhills!

You get first bike tracks most everywhere you go.

You get good at 'quick dismounts' and cyclocross remounts. Usually in quick succession!

You get good at riding very slow and un-weighting the bars.

You are instantly cool riding a Fatbike. Everybody just gawks at you at you and says "...nice tires!"

It's never felt so good to clear a slight uphill.

A 10 mile ride seems long.

You get to ride your bike on snow!!

You've never been so excited for 2" of fresh snow on hardpack.

It opens up a whole nuther world of adventures.

The worst:

You have to hike more than you think.

If you try to shoulder your bike, you may break your collarbone.

The bike is not flippable. However, you are.

You always think "it'll get better around the next turn", but it usually doesn't but you keep postholing anyways.

You rely on "the others" packing down the trail so you can ride it.

Your bike is going to be one heavy rigid bike.

A 10 mile ride seems long.

When you push your bike in snow, the front tire tends to act like a plow instead of a ski tip.

You will dismount a LOT, usually quite athletically, and tip over into the soft snow on the side of the hardpacked trail you were trying so hard to stay atop. (My favorite move is when you stick your foot out to stop your slow-motion fall but you sink into the snow anyways with said foot and fall over, filling your pogies up with snow.)

Once you go Fat, it's hard to go back! You always want to go fatter -- regular MTB tires look absolutely puny now!

Each time i go ride my Rotund-cycle, it's like i relearn how to ride a bike. It's a different type of riding, not dissimilar to riding a singlespeed for the first time. Not better, not worse, just a different style of two wheels. Similar to a singlespeed, you have to learn to keep your momentum for the uphills, ride smoothly so the rear wheel keeps its traction, and well...be OK with hiking a lot. No way around it...hiking (or postholing?) is part of snowbiking, at least around these parts. But what it gets you in frustration gives back 10-fold in the experience of being out on singletrack you could never ride this time of year, and cruising snowpacked dirt roads that are the approaches to your favorite backcountry ski spots. What they lack in agility they return in exploration potential.
I usually only experience winter in the woods on skis or snowshoes. I've been skiing a total of ONCE this year so far...yes, that sucks, but it's sucked for snow. The fatbike has given me that exploration bug again to go out and try and ride all my old favorite trails in the wintertime and experience them in a totally unique and different way. To be honest, I've become somewhat ho-hum with the summer riding in my area. Yes, I know, I'm spoiled, but after living and riding bikes here for 20 years, I just 'know' it all so well! Ya know?
Yesterday was my birthday. Happy birthday to me! I'm 39 now and I rode for exactly 3.9 hours on the fatbike around the greater Nederland area exploring what is rideable on the Rotundcycle and what is not. I was pleasantly surprised with staying pretty local and having a great selection of packed snow, ice, and even dry dirt singletrack trail to ride! I found out that Sugar Mag, Mud Lake and most of West Mag is rideable, at least on a fatbike. And it's just awesome to be up there in winter. Such a unique and different experience on the fatty!

My new toy is mounted to the bar there - a GoPro Hero 2 - a present from Mrs. Meriwether. An awesome present that will get a ton of use but I probably wouldn't have bought it for myself. I'll post some video clips of the ride in the next day.

After the ride, we headed to dinner with some friends at Katmandu's and then out for a beer at Backcountry Pizza. The Dogfish 60min IPA was freshly tapped and pretty good, but the Avery Mephistopheles was insane!
Here's to another "year" (what is a year other than a fabricated timescale?) and onto another! Cheers.
Snow MTB race OTC (Off-the-couch). I think I've ridden at most once a week for a couple of hours (usually with a beer in the middle) and even considering, my first snow mountain bike race last night at Copper Mtn (the "Copper Mountain El Fuego" put on by the Cloud City Wheelers) was a total blast! It was a much harder 10 miles than it should have been! Five steel*wool riders and Demi the dog headed up in BobB & MT's Fleetwood coach. That thing is plush! I wish I had one of those for when I was doing the National's and CORPS series'. We arrived an hour before the start of the race to register and watch the sun (and temperature) go down.
There was a huge group of racers - 160 or so! The racers were collecting at the propane-burning fires that encompassed the start area. There were three race categories - men's, women's, and singlespeed. The vast majority of people were on regular mountain bikes, but there was a cool variety of fat-tired bikes - from 9:Zero:7's to Surly's to Salsa Mukluk's, to a sweet Ti Fatbike with the biggest tires you can get (Big Fat Larrys which are around 4.5" wide).
A quick shot of some scotch at the start "line" (in the dark, it's hard to tell where you are and aren't), followed by a big bang (literally, fireworks marked the start of the race), followed by mass chaos of slipping and sliding out cyclists heading south out on the snowpacked course. The crew I was with all neglected to pre-ride the course, so were going in blind. There were red pin-flags marking the sides of the course but in the dark they were just getting run over and buried. It was pretty much a free-for-all -- take any line on which you can stay afloat and upright!
I spent the first 300 yards of the start trying not to run into anyone or get run into. I remember MT passing me on the right, seemingly entranced in the dude on the fatbike with a boombox strapped onto his rear pannier rack blasting some indecipherable music. Then I remember passing him as he went into the soft shoulder and had to stop. A regular MTB was the better bike to have for some parts of the course, but not overall, as those riders were flailing in the softer snow spinning out and running, the guys and gals with fatbikes were able to roll on through. But even on the back-stretch of the course where it wasn't very well packed down, everybody was walking or running. We must of all run about 2 miles of each lap. So anyways, after a few minutes which felt pretty sudden, and I was strangely near the front of the pack in the top 10. The fastest guys were off the front immediately, smart to 'exit-stage-left' that mass start hysteria. There was even a dude on a cross bike...! Not a great call.

The course was 2, 5 mile laps at the base area of Copper Mountain. It incorporated some of the nordic trails on the southern side of the mountain, and went up north of the base area. It took us on some bridges, across an ice rink, up a flight of stairs, and through the frozen cobblestone base area. It had a feel of a cyclocross race that mated with a night snow MTB race.

There was a great group of people at this event. Lots more spectators than I'd ever thought would show up for the sub-20 degree temperature night race and cheering at all that passed. This was my initiation into another sub-culture of mountain biking and I have to say, I was happily surprised. I will be back. It felt like how the Fruita Fat Tire Festival singlespeed race used to feel, where you couldn't point out a top pro if you tried but there was no lack of fast riders present. The 'locals' were on full fatbikes and costumes, ranging from blue tutu's to wigs and more. The whole event had a laid back feel and I know I was one of many that were just 'trying it out' for the first time.

In the end, no matter how un-fit I am, I have a hard time turning my motor off, even off the couch. My heart rate hasn't been that high in...a long time. I ended up somehow pulling an 7th place OOMA (at least that's what some dude told me as me and 6th place were trying to out sprint each other on bikes that just do NOT like to sprint). This guy was in blue jeans and passed me before the last stair run-up and got me by a bike length. Too fun!

Heyride and MT were themselves in a dual, and it's all hearsay but Heyride apparently pulled a full 360 on the sledding hill descent - foot out and all - to avoid a bail! I wish I could've seen that. Shortly following that maneuver, he put in a fierce attack on the last climb getting MT in the end. MT won the women's race, which is great since it was also her Birthday! BobB and Toopa followed not far away and beer drinking was commenced.
Oskar Blues was again sponsoring the event and had free Pale Ale and Pilsner to those hanging out by the fake fires and heat lamps outside the bar. Some ball-game was on the tv's inside but the wheeled-ones were outside sharing war stories and having a pint or three.
The race was the start of the 4 race Leadville Winter Mountain Bike race series. Next up is Tennessee Pass on Feb. 4th where they'll use the nordic trails on Ski Cooper. Then there are two races in Leadville later on in the winter.
